In ancient Egypt, scarab beetles are thought to embody the divine manifestation of the morning sun, Khepri, whose name was depicted as the scarab hieroglyph, also meaning to “create”. Khepri was believed to create the sun and roll it over the eastern horizon each morning, in a similar motion the scarab uses to roll around balls of dung.

Scarabs stood for the never-ending cycle of life, immortality, creation, transformation, and life after death. Scarab amulets were frequently worn as protection.
